Every piece of commissioned art has a story. Some begin with a photograph. Others start with a special place, a family memory, or a significant moment in time. For acclaimed artist Ray Guzman, one of his most meaningful commissioned paintings began with something entirely different — a dream.
The result is “Walking on a Dream,” an extraordinary 78-inch by 14-foot oil painting created on Italian linen. More than a work of commissioned art, it is a deeply personal exploration of love, loss, memory, and the mysterious ways inspiration can arrive.
A Dream That Refused to Fade
One afternoon, while sitting with a close friend in a rooftop penthouse garden, Ray shared a vivid dream that had stayed with him long after waking. In the dream, Ray and his late wife, Renata, were sitting together in a black 1965 Chevy Impala. The car had become stuck in a gravel pit and would not move.
Renata quietly stepped out of the passenger side and began walking away. Ray called after her.
“Where are you going?”
She never answered.
Instead, she continued moving farther into the distance, crossing a beautiful shallow creek and heading toward what appeared to be a strange one-wheeled motorcycle. Other figures sped past on similar vehicles, all traveling across a vast landscape of gravel and earth.
As Ray described the dream, his friend listened carefully. Then he made an unexpected proposal.
“I want to commission you to paint it.”
Ray was stunned.
As a lifelong artist, he had painted many subjects and completed numerous commissions, but he had never attempted to transform a dream into a large-scale work of art.
His friend, however, saw the vision clearly. He believed the dream carried meaning and trusted Ray’s ability to bring it to life on canvas. The commission was approved on the spot.
Bringing a Dream to Life
What followed was a creative journey unlike any other. Without preliminary studies or extensive sketches, Ray began translating the dream’s emotional power into a monumental painting.
The finished work, titled “Walking on a Dream,” stretches 14 feet across and captures a surreal landscape where memory, grief, and imagination coexist.
At the center of the composition is Renata crossing the creek, moving toward an unknown destination. Behind her sits the stranded Impala, a symbol of a life that can no longer continue unchanged.
Beyond the landscape rises a stone wall. In the distance, viewers discover a miniature Hoboken and the recognizable skyline of New York City beneath dramatic skies that blend sunlight and storm clouds.
Each element emerged directly from the dream while evolving into powerful visual symbols of transition, remembrance, and enduring connection.
An Artist’s Statement
According to Ray:
“Rather than illustrating a story, the painting seeks to hold the emotional truth of that dream… the feeling of watching someone beloved move beyond reach, while sensing that the experience itself carries meaning.”
The painting is both deeply personal and universally relatable. Anyone who has experienced loss can recognize the emotions woven throughout the work. Yet the painting also speaks to hope, transformation, and the mysterious ways our subconscious minds help us process life’s most profound experiences.
For Ray, “Walking on a Dream” became an act of witness, a way to transform grief into beauty while honoring the memory of someone he loved dearly.
The Power of Commissioned Art
Commissioned artwork offers something that cannot be found in galleries or purchased off a shelf.
It allows a collector to collaborate with an artist to create something entirely unique—an original work built around a personal story, memory, vision, or experience.
“Walking on a Dream” demonstrates the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when a collector places trust in an artist’s creative process.
The result is not simply a painting.
It is a legacy piece that will inspire conversation and reflection for generations.
